The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has filed action in Court seeking an order to ban 51 porn websites which had over 1,000 clips showing Sri Lankan schoolchildren and youth.
SIU sources said yesterday that legal action had been initiated on Wednesday (24) to obtain a court order.
The Court had conducted an investigation on a request made by the NCPA’s SIU, sources said, noting that advice of the Attorney-General’s Department had been sought and the ruling was expected next Wednesday (31). They said that the sites contained images and clips of schoolchildren in their uniforms and young boys and girls.
One of the main reasons for an increase in the incidence of rape and child abuse in Sri Lanka was Internet porn, sources said. The NCPA had requested the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission earlier to ban a number of porn sites, especially the ones that can be viewed on mobile phones, they added. “There are over 100,000 foreign porn sites, but the images of local men and women had attracted the most number of hits, police sources said.
Sources said that the NCPA would take action to identify the persons who were in the images and clips after next week’s court ruling. (DJ)
