Nishantha crowns as Carrom World Champion

Nishantha Fernando from Moratuwa beat Bharathidasan of India to crown himself as the World Carrom Champion at Galadari Hotel, Colombo, on Sunday.

In the men’s individual finals of the 6thWorld Carrom Championship, Nisahantha beat Bharathidasan in straight sets with 25-04 and 25-10 points. Brarathidasan beat long time world champion Yogesh Pardeshi in the semi-finals before meeting Nishantha in the final.

Nishantha, a 34 year old without a proper job, is also the runner up in the Swiss League tournament held at the same venue. Despite looking forward for a job, he is currently coaching Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa and Nalanda College, Colombo.

Sri Lanka also emerged runners up of Men’s and Women’s team Events and Women’s doubles events.

Despite being ranked second in the world of Carrom, none of the Sri Lankan women able to reach the semi-finals in Women’s single event. Four Indians battled it out from the semi-final stage in the women’s singles.

This tournament was conducted from 31st November to 4th November, 2012 at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo. Next World Championship will be held in the United Kingdom, in 2016.

Semi Finals

  • Nishantha Fernando (Sri Lanka) beat K. Sirinivas (Inida) 2-0 (25/18, 25/04)
  • Bharathidasan (India) beat Yogesh Pardeshi (India) 2-0 (25/24, 25/04)

Women’s Single – Final

  • Rashmi Kumari (India) beat I. Illabazhaki (India) 2-0 (25/12, 25/11)

Semi Finals

  • Rashmi Kumari (India) beat Kavita Somanchi (India) 2-0 (25/02, 25/18)
  • Illabazhaki (India) beat Parmila Devi (India) 2-0 (25/3, 25/20)
