The mother of a seven-day-old infant and three other women were arrested on charges of having been involved in the sale and purchase of the infant for Rs.5,000.
Urubokka police said among those arrested was the woman who bought the child at Urubokka in Bengamuwa on Sunday and the two women who negotiated the sale.
Police began their investigations after someone tipped them off that an infant born on November at the Kamburupitiya Andapana Government Hospital had been sold.
Police took into its custody the infant which had been born to a 27-year-old unmarried woman who is a resident of Keeripitiya.
