Sri Lanka Netballers placed fourth in Singapore

Sri Lanka placed fourth as they lost to Namibia by 76-70 at the third place play off at the ‘Nations Cup Netball tournament, concluded at Singapore, on Saturday. Sri Lanka was leading at the half time by 36/40, before they falter in the third and fourth quarters.

Sri Lanka beat the hosts, Singapore, by 65 – 52 and booked their place in the consolation finals. Their victory in the quarter final against Singapore was significant due to the fact that Sri Lanka could not touch the Asia Cup in Colombo as they were beaten by Singaporeans in the grand finale.

In the preliminary round, Sri Lanka beat Namibia and Ireland easily before losing to Malaysia and Tanzania.

Sri Lanka women’s netball team is comprised of 12 players and jointly led by Tharjani Sivalingam and Gayatri Lankatilakage.

The tournament was attended by six countries. Malaysia, Namibia, Ireland, Tanzania and Sri Lanka took part in the tournament while Singapore being the host.

Most outstanding players of each team were presented with special awards. Sri Lanka skipper, Gayatri Lankatilakage won the best player’s award for Sri Lanka.

Tanzania beat Malaysia by 45/38 to crown at the tournament.

Singapore and Ireland became fifth and sixth in the tournament respectively. (By Sajeeka Jayasinghe)
