Mahela Jayawardene just a short while ago addressing a media briefing in Hobart confirmed that he will be stepping down from captaincy after the current tour of Australia. Jayawardene had taken over the captaincy for a one year period. During his tenure Sri Lanka won a Test series against Pakistan, drew home series against New Zealand and England and reached the finals of the ICC World T-20 before going down to West Indies in the final.
Meanwhile, SSC opener Dimuth Karunaratne is set to play Friday’s first Test against Australia here at Hobart instead of Tharanga Paranavithana. Left-arm seamer Chanaka Welagedara also was brought into the side instead of off-spinner Suraj Randiv, who played the last Test against New Zealand.
Those were the only two changes Sri Lanka made from their last Test at P. Sara Oval, which they lost by 167 runs.
