An Australian parliamentary delegation led by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop arrived in the country yesterday to discuss the issue of people smuggling to Australia.
The delegation will also witness and discuss ongoing development activities in the country, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said. The group will meet with senior government officials and other officials for discussions on curbing people smuggling activities.
The delegation will also visit parts of the Northern Province and Trincomalee.. During Australia’s Foreign Minister Senator Bob Carr’s visit to the island last month, Sri Lanka and Australia decided to establish a Joint Working Group to address the current issues of illegal migration, people smuggling and law enforcement.
