Politicians won’t plunder under ward system: Minister

People’s representatives would not have to plunder public funds after the introduction of the new electoral ward system as the new system would not necessitate them to spend millions of rupees on election campaigns, Irrigation and water Management minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

Speaking at the function to inaugurate the new building for the Ridimaliyadda Pradeshiya Sabha in the Badulla District on Saturday the Minister said that under the ward system in elections people’s representatives would not have to fight each other for preferential votes and also they would not have to spend exorbitant amounts of monies on election campaigns.

Elaborating the way corruption had escalated owing to the present Proportional Representation (PR) system he said that candidates had to spend millions of rupees to garner support from all over a district which compelled them to loot public funds in order to earn what they had spent during the elections.(Nishantha Kumara)
