UK undecided on attending CHOGM

The UK is undecided on the level of its attendance at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to take place in Colombo.

However, a high ranking British official said the country would expect Sri Lanka to “demonstrate its commitment to upholding the Commonwealth values of good governance, adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights”.

Visiting UK Minister, Alistair Burt emphasized on the need for good governance, property rights, strong civil institutions and the rule of law for true prosperity.

Burt pointed out that the UK had welcomed the LLRC recommendations and had been pushing Sri Lanka to implement the recommendations spelt out in its report.

“And it is why the UK speaks frankly to the Sri Lankan government about what more we believe it needs to do to ensure peace and prosperity in your country,” he said on Friday delivering a guest lecture on ‘Sri Lanka: 2013 and beyond’ at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies.
