Army report on Rathupaswala on Aug 21

The date of submission of the preliminary report of the committee appointed by Army Commander Daya Ratnayake to investigate the events that took place in Rathupaswala on August 1, has now postponed to August 21, informed sources said.

A senior officer attached to Army Headquarters said that the delay was due to the police officers who were to give who evidence before the committee being unable to do so as they had been summoned to the Gampaha courts for the post mortem examinations and to give evidence.

The committee is headed by Major General Jagath Dias, and includes Brigadiers Jayanath Jayaweera, Indunil Silva and Thilak Weerakoon. They were to have handed over their report to the army commander within two weeks.

Evidence had been given by members of the army, including Brigadier Deshapriya Gunawardene. A summary of the evidence is being prepared.
Meanwhile, army media spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya, said that the statements of members of the public would be recorded at the Weliveriya Police Station by the Army’s investigation committee over the next few days.(Indika Ramanayake)
