UN Human Rights Commissioner Nawaneetham Pillay said today at the UNHRC office in Jaffna that she had many questions regarding the Human Rights situation in Sri Lanka and that it would take her some time to give a full assessment of the situation in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to a section of civilians at the UN office in Jaffna after a presentation, she said that she was interested to know whether the civilians had been consulted regarding the projects and policies implemented.
Speaking further she said that her mandate of the visit to Sri Lanka was to gather information regarding the Human Rights situation in Sri Lanka.
“ My mandate here is to inquire into the Human Rights aspects and I’m very interested in talking to the people to see if they have been given a position in decision making bodies and whether their voices were heard in the decision making process,” she said.
Ms. Pillay said that it was evident that the population would benefit from the ongoing reconstruction process in the North.
“It is very visible that people will benefit from the steps taken towards reconstruction that is taking place” she said.
