United States to talk to TNA

Ahead of the next session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, the United States (US) had decided to hold talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for a review of action taken by the government of Sri Lanka in conformity with the resolution adopted early this year, officials said today

The US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka was adopted at the UNHRC session in March this year. The resolution called for the implementation of constructive recommendations by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and addressing accountability issues during the last stage of the war.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay is expected to submit a report on Sri Lanka to the next session scheduled for March, 2013.

TNA National List MP M.A. Sumanthiran told Daily Mirror yesterday that his party would undertake a visit to the US early next year to discuss various issues pertaining to the present stalemate in political talks with the government and the implementation of   steps outlined in the UNHRC resolution.

Asked whether this is a visit on an invitation by the US government, he said, “This is part of our dialogue with the US authorities.  We are supposed to undertake this visit early next year. However, dates are yet to be fixed.”

A TNA delegation led by R. Sampanthan also visited the US on an invitation by the State Department last year.

Also, the TNA visited India last month and had talks with leaders of that country on the political situation here.  Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also participated in talks with the TNA. (By Kelum Bandara)
