Bilingual national anthem proposal sent to President

The National Languages and Social Integration Minister have proposed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the presidential secretariat to rewrite the ‘National Anthem’ with Sinhala and Tamil verses to be sung particularly at national events.

The ministry has proposed that the new national anthem be sung at the forthcoming Independence Day celebrations in Trincomalee.

The ministry’s parliamentary consultative committee took this decision on Tuesday and will be conveyed to the President and the presidential secretariat.

Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara told Daily Mirror yesterday that his Ministry wanted to introduce a ‘consolidated national anthem’. (Kelum Bandara )
