Brief stutter before England take 2-1 lead

It took England 55 minutes of intense drama but they achieved victory without major damage. They got the last Indian wicket for eight runs added to India’s overnight lead of 32, but their top order batted with a bit of complacence and a bit of nerves to be reduced to 8 for 3 before Ian Bell and Nick Comtpon eased the situation with sensible batting. This is the first time since 1999-2000 that India have been beaten in back-to-back home Tests.

England began the day with a three-over old ball. R Ashwin, who batted well for his overnight 83, refused singles twice off the first four balls of the first over, bowled by Steve Finn, but when the field came up he pierced it for boundaries off the last two balls. James Anderson, though, tickled Pragyan Ojha’s off bail with the fourth ball he bowled.

Ashwin came back to bowl his hat-trick ball, which Alastair Cook took a single off. However, in the same over, Cook tried to loft Ashwin over long-off and was stumped only for the second time in his career. Pragyan Ojha built pressure from the other end with maidens. He got Jonathan Trott plumb lbw with a ball that didn’t turn. Kevin Pietersen soon edged Ashwin to MS Dhoni, and the 33 remaining runs felt like 99.

However, Ashwin released the pressure with a full toss – an attempted carrom ball – to Bell, who flicked it away for four through midwicket. How symbolic then that the lack of patience eased England’s nerves. Bell hit two more pretty boundaries, and Compton remained solid, showing no hurry whatsoever to get off the park. Along the way, the two ran well and exposed once again the poor fielding of the tired Indian players.

Bell finished it off with a push to square leg, pumped the fist for a second, kicking off scenes of jubilation in the dressing room. The England players soon went on a victory lap to acknowledge the great support they get from their fans in foreign lands, and India were left with a lot of soul-searching.

Opp. members of the PSC reject report

Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) member and UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kriella said they reject the PSC report submitted to parliament this morning by Committee Chairman, Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

He siad that the submission of the report should be hailed as a world record due to the swiftness of the committee proceedings.

“We, as members of the PSC were given documents on the December 5, while CJ Shirani Bandaranayake was given documents that comprised of nearly 1000 pages on December 6 and was asked to return the next day with a prepared defense. On December 5, we were only given a list of documents and there was no mention of a list of witnesses despite repeated calls by us for one. Suddenly the PSC, without the opposition members and the Chief Justice, had come to its own conclusion and submitted a report today which speaks of bias. It was submitted in record speed baffling any rational thinking citizen. We reject the report and the proceedings in its entirety” he said.

Kiriella also said that it was clear from the start of the proceedings of the PSC that the government was on a witch-hunt.

” This was not an inquiry it was an inquisition. It was obvious that the government was on witch-hunt against the Chief Justice right from the beginning. We couldn’t speak about this as members of the PSC which is why we decided to walk out of it and tell the country what really was taking place” he said.

Meanwhile, PSC member and JVP MP Vijitha Herath also expressing his views said, he believes the entire process was biased against the Chief Justice and did not conform to even the basic tenets of a fair and impartial inquiry.

“This is why we all put forward certain conditions in order to ensure that the process and mechanism is free and fair. However it was not to be so. It was a one-sided affair where the complainant was the judge and the jury all in one,” Herath said adding, the process was fast forwarded to suit the expectations of the government and it was beyond belief as to how such conclusions were reached.

Herath called on the citizens of the country including professionals from all strata to rally against this draconian decision, in order to safe guard democracy, rule of law and the independence of the judiciary of this country.

“ All three tenets of a basic civilized society were violated through this process and this is an indictment on the citizens of this country. Therefore we call upon all citizens of this country to agitate against this very grave and serious violation which could lead to a breakdown in civil society itself” he said. (Hafeel Farisz)

No govt. investment in SupremeSat: Minister

Minister of Telecommunication and Information Technology Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told Parliament yesterday that the Sri Lankan government had not made any investments in the launch of Supreme Sat and none of the satellite orbital slots belonging to Sri Lanka has been allocated for this project.

Making a reply speech to a series of questions raised by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament on December 6 regarding this project, the Minister said that According to particulars provided by the Board of Investment the SupremeSAT Solutions (PVT) Limited is a company registered under the provisions of the Companies Act No 7 of 2007 and its offices are situated at 33th Floor of the World Trade Centre. The primary objective of this company is to provide efficient and low cost broadband facilities to Lankan consumers. This company has entered into a joint venture agreement with the Great Wall Industrial Corporation and Sino Satellite Communication Company in China.

The SupremeSAT has submitted a project report to achieve their objective in three phases to the BOI. The first phase would be launched in 2012, the second in 2013 and the third in 2015. The estimated investment for the first phase stands at US $ 4 million, for the second phase US $ 15 million and the third phase at US $ 300 million.

The BOI gave on May 15, 2012 its approval to SupremeSAT to set up this project at Pallekele Industrial Zone on the basis of a no objection letter provided by the Telecommunication Regulation Commission of Sri Lanka. The BOI approval has been granted only for the first and second phases of the project.

Accordingly during the first phase an earth transmission centre would be set up for up linking and down linking between the earth transmission centre and the ChinaSAT 12 (SupremeSAT). It is planned to allow for transmission from the SupremeSAT satellite and the earth centre during the second stage.

It is also envisaged to launched another satellite into orbit in the third phase.

The satellite orbital slots from 50 degree east and 121.5 degree east have been allocated for Sri Lanka. The TRCSL has not given any permission to either local or foreign company to use these slots. ChinaSAT 12 uses an orbital slot belonging to China as we have been informed.

The TRCSL has not given permission for a satellite project of the Sri Lankan government.

Since the SupremeSAT 1 satellite is not a Sri Lankan government project its cost and the methodology of covering the cost are not applicable.

According to the information furnished by the BOI, the local partners of the venture are Supreme Solutions Pvt Ltd operating from th e 33rd floor of the World Trade Centre. This is 100 percent Sri Lankan private venture and their total investments for the first and second phases are US $ 2.38 million. According to the BOI the cost for the third phase would be earned from a loan obtained from a foreign bank.

The directors of the SupremeSAT (Pvt) Ltd are Ramasamy Muttusamy Maniwanan and Sanmuganathan Sudarshan.

The Government of Sri Lanka has not invested or paid any financial agreement with relation to this project. And none of the satellite orbital slots belonging to Sri Lanka has been allocated for this. Though the SupremeSAT pvt Ltd is a private venture it would increase the Sri Lankan investment

portfolio and would help Sri Lanka becoming the knowledge hub of Asia.

Opposition members withdraw from PSC

Four opposition members of the Parliamentary Select Committee announced a short while ago that they withdrew from the committee and stated that they put forward four conditions before the Chairman of the PSC to further remain in the committee.

The opposition members were John Amaratunga, Lakshman Kiriella (UNP), Vijitha Herath (DNA) and R Sampanthan (TNA). Addressing a press conference at the Parliamentary complex MP Amaratunga said that the PSC does not allow the formal procedures on the impeachment.

MP Kiriella said that the members of Parliament who had signed the impeachment motion had not seen any proof before signing it as the PSC members themselves saw the documents only on December 5.

Opposition members later walked out of the committee room as the Chairman of the PSC refused to accept the conditions put forward by the opposition members.

According to a copy of the statement made available to the press,  the four members  said that they requested an opportunity be given  for  the lawyers of the Chief Justice to cross-examine complainants.

“It is also a matter of note that the Chief Justice has not been afforded the courtesies’ and privileges due to her office. We have made our position clear regarding these matters. It is the duty of the PSC to maintain the highest standard of fairness in conducting this inquiry. We also regrettably note that during these proceedings, the treatment meted out to the Chief Justice was insulting and intimidatory and the remarks made were clearly indicative of preconceived findings of guilt,” the statement signed by the four members said.

More asylum seekers deported from the UK

Another twenty nine Sri Lankans who sought political asylum in Britain were deported back to the Island accompanied by British Immigration/Emigration and police officers yesterday morning.

After the rejection of their applications for refugee status they were kept in several migrant refugee camps before being sent back on a special chartered flight from Heathrow airport under strict security.

British High Commission and the United Nations International Organisation for migrants had mediated in this deportation process. Each returnee was escorted by two officers of the British Immigration authorities and the British police.

Twenty five Tamils, one Muslim and three Sinhalese were among these returnees identified as residents of Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Colombo and Wattala.

Some of them had visited the UK on student visas and overstayed. Some others had arrived in the UK during the war and sought political asylum while being employed in various sectors.

The majority of them had been in the UK for periods ranging from a year to ten years and reluctant to return to their homeland.

Since Britain commenced deporting asylum seekers in 2011, more than 200 Sri Lankans had been sent back on special flights.

After these returnees were handed over to the local Emigration authorities by their British counterparts, they were directed for further investigations by the CID unit of the Airport.

They were to be released after questioning by the state intelligence division. (Deepa Adikari)

Paralympic medalist wins LMD’s annual award

Leading business magazine LMD announced yesterday that its Sri Lankan Of The Year for 2012 is paralympic sprint champion Pradeep Sanjaya.

The young man from the Armed Forces follows in the footsteps President Mahinda Rajapaksa – who was LMD’s nominee in 2010, for his Commander-in-Chief role in winning the war against terrorism – and former cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara.

LMD says that “the term ‘role model’ is used often: at times, by taking liberties with its meaning; and on occasion, being looked down as a mere cliché.

But this year, Sri Lankans found a bona fide role model in its latest sporting sensation Pradeep Sanjaya – the athlete who shone on the world stage, despite the odds being stacked heavily against him. His heroics at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London opened a new chapter in our land’s history books.”

In an exclusive interview with LMD at the Sinha Regiment headquarters in Ambepussa, for its December Cover Story, Sanjaya states: “When I joined the Army, people could not walk on the streets without fearing for their lives. But now, even schoolchildren can travel around without fear. People can travel to any part of the island in peace. This is what we fought for…” “I’m very proud to have given Sri Lanka its first Paralympic medal.

Sri Lankans were very happy about it… and especially my regiment was very proud of my achievement,” he said.

The interview with Pradeep Sanjaya appears in the latest edition of LMD, which will be released to bookstores and selected supermarkets tomorrow.

Memorable milestone in a pristine journey

Sri Lanka’s foremost exponent in classical music and household name Pandit W D Amaradeva celebrated his 85th milestone in life in the simple style characteristic of the man who bequeathed an indigenous music ethos to the nation during his near seven decade long artistic career, with wife and pillar of strength, Wimala at his side. Amaradeva was the foremost influence that pioneered what could be called a truly indigenous music genre immersed in the national ethos and cultural identity. His creations cut across over five generations of Lankan classical music lovers in their mass appeal and uniqueness.

Amaradeva’s renditions are still in vogue despite their antiquity and will remain timeless for generations more to savour.

Culture and the Arts Minister T B Ekanayake, Sri Lanka Arts Council Board chairman Prof Carlo Fonseka and Sri Lanka Music Panel chairman Rohana Weerasinghe with journalist Gamini Sumanasekera were present wishing the Thespian a long life at his home in Maharagama.

Amaradeva mimed some of his famous songs, which brought back nostalgic memories of the past for those present.

Appreciating the service of Pandith Amaradeva, Minister Ekanayake said it was a pleasure and honour to wish Pandith Amaradeva who is the greatest musician produced by the country. “I am here to convey the best wishes of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the government to Pandit Amaradeva. We need to groom another leader-Mahela

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene who is in Australia, Wednesday said that Sri Lanka should groom another captain to lead the Sri Lankan cricket team.

“We need to groom another leader as well. It’s very important to have that changeover done smoothly while the senior players are still in the side,” the AFP reported quoting Jayawardana, ahead of a three-day tour match against a Chairman’s XI in Canberra.

“That’s something that I will speak with the selectors (about) and see what’s best for them and then make a call,” he said.

He also said he will consider his future as captain after the Australia tour which includes three Tests, five one day internationals and two Twenty20 matches.

“After this, we get a well-deserved four weeks off, after about three years, so it gives me a bit of time to think what I need to do,” he told reporters.

Jayawardene said he expected Australia to attack his men like “wounded soldiers” after their hard-fought loss to South Africa and the retirement of Ricky Ponting.

Australia suffered a 309-run defeat in the third and deciding Test against South Africa which ended Monday, losing the series 1-0.

It allowed the Proteas to retain the number one world ranking and meant 17-year veteran Ponting was not given the send-off the team wanted.

“I see them as wounded soldiers — they could come back stronger against us,” he told reporters, adding that even without Ponting Australia were still a “decent lineup”.

“Australia will come hard at us, especially after the (last South Africa) Test because of what happened to them. We need to brace for that and make sure we handle those tough situations.”

Sri Lanka begin their tour just days after being beaten by New Zealand in Colombo in the second of a two-Test series which ended 1-1.

Prolific batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who earlier this year won the International Cricket Council’s Cricketer of the Year award, disappointed against the Black Caps, scoring only 21 runs over three innings.

Jayawardene said the 35-year-old batsman-wicketkeeper would be out to prove something in Australia.

“I am happy that he went through a lean phase because he’ll be really hungry for runs — that’s Kumar for you,” he said.

Sri Lanka and Australia begin their first Test in Hobart on December 14, the subsequent Tests beginning on December 26 in Melbourne and January 3 in Sydney.

Govt. urges action against Wijeyadasa

The Government today asked Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to take action against UNP MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe for his involvement in legally challenging the parliamentary process to impeach Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

The Speaker said he would examine the matter and take appropriate action.

Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake, raising a point of order referred to the Speaker’s ruling that court proceedings had no binding on Parliament and asked about Mr. Rajapakshe’s involvement in the judicial process against the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC).

“I do not know how Mr. Rajapakshe as a member representing this august assembly has legally challenged this process. He has done it despite the Speaker’s ruling. It is true that he is the President of the Bar Association. But, he cannot do so as an MP,” Mr. Dissanayake said.

However Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe argued that in this instance Mr. Rakapakshe had acted as the President of the Bar Association and not as a legislator.(KB & YP)

Request for BASL, C’wealth observers rejected

The second appearance by Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayke, before the Parliamentary Select Committee yesterday resulted in the entire area around the Parliament complex, in Kotte, being cordoned off and declared out of bounds for the media.

The Chief Justice arrived at the Parliament accompanied by seven lawyers around 10.10 a.m. and was escorted to the Committee room where the PSC began its proceedings at 10.30 a.m.

A group of protestors holding up posters with the words “Shame Madam!” had lined up along the Parliament roundabout and a large number of Police as well as some army personnel had been deployed for security.

Unlike during her previous appearance before the committee, journalists covering Parliament were strictly prohibited from entering the area where the Committee was in progress as well as lingering along the corridors.

During the pre-lunch sessions, which were held up to around 1.15 p.m. lawyers for the Chief Justice requested that a team of observers from the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Commonwealth be allowed to observe the committee proceedings. However, the request was rejected.

Her lawyers also noted, as they had done on the previous occasion, that documentary evidence of the charges made against the Chief Justice had not yet been made available to them.

Another request to summon all 117 MPs who signed the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice, before the Committee is under consideration.

Meanwhile, the four Opposition members of the Committee said that they had requested the Speaker to adjourn sittings of the Committee for one month from Dec. 8 to January 8, when Parliament sessions for the year are to end after the Budget is passed.

They also said there was no clarity on the procedural progress of the PSC and that the Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe would raise the issue in Parliament this morning.

The post-lunch session of the PSC began around 2.30 p.m. with the Chief Justice’s lawyers returning after lunch while the Chief Justice arrived around 2.55 p.m.

The team of lawyers, who appeared for the Chief Justice included Romesh de Silva PC, Kandiah Neelakandan, Nalin Laduwahetty PC, Sugath Caldera, Riyaz Ameen, Iraj de Silva and Saliya Peiris.

Chief Justice asks more time for detailed reply

Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake has asked for a further five weeks to send ‘a detailed response’ to the 14 charges made against her in an impeachment motion, Daily Mirror learns. In her written request forwarded through the law firm ‘Neelakandan and Neelakandan Associates’ informed the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) the CJ said she had sent a ‘limited response’ to the charges on November 20.

She said November 30 deadline to file answers was not sufficient for the purpose, and therefore asked for a further five weeks.

She denied all the allegations made against her in the resolution signed by 117 Government members. It is also learnt that she had raised concerns about the failure by the PSC to give her some details required to provide an in-depth response.

Meanwhile, the PSC chaired by Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa will start investigations into these charges today in the parliament complex.  The committee members have been kept informed about it.

The PSC has powers to make inquiries into these charges and submit its findings to Parliament for a resolution to be adopted.  The committee comprises seven representatives from the government and four from the opposition.  The opposition members have requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to suspend PSC proceedings by at least by one month after the budget debate. They handed over their letter in this regard to the Speaker on Friday. (Kelum Bandara)

Refugees could now return – SL

Sri Lanka said the emphasis by the international community that the island was now free from the dangers that constrained it during the time of the conflict, has been an important factor for those who left the country as refugees during the time of the conflict to return.

Addressing the 101st Council Session of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Geneva, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva Ravinatha Aryasinha had observed that emphasis by the international community that Sri Lanka was now free from the dangers that constrained it during the time of the conflict, has been an important factor for those who left the country as refugees during the time of the conflict to return, with the joint assistance of the host countries, and organisations such as the IOM.

He however said, “At the same time illegal people-smuggling rings continue to rob families not only of their hard-earned savings, but sometimes even their loved ones.”

Noting that the IOM, as well as a number of foreign governments had in recent months acknowledged that many Sri Lankans who continue to arrive on foreign soil illegally, were in fact economic migrants and not refugees, Ambassador Aryasinha said Sri Lanka remained committed to work with international partners toward raising awareness as to the dangers relating to illegal migration, with a view to end such practices.
