Mother KINGSWOOD

2Kingswood College Kandy was founded by Mr L.E.Blaze on 4 May, 1891 in Pavilion Street, Kandy.  Later the school moved to “Randles Hill” in Peradeniya Road.  It is one of the oldest schools in the country.

Mr Blaze modelled the school as an English Public School. It is significant that the house system was introduced to the school in 1922 and the names selected were those main public schools in England (Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Rugby).  He built up a cadre on the strength of his reputation as an educationist.  He coined the term “Gentlemen of Kingswood” to describe the body of students.

Past 123 years of Kingswood College history highlights.

  • The first boys school to employ female teachers.
  • The first school to introduce Rugby Football to Sri Lanka.
  • One of the first five schools in the country to establish a Cadet Corps and the first ever Champions of the Herman-Loos Trophy in 1917.
